Tony's Pizza in Clearwater

Despite the name, anyone who stops in to Tony's Pizzeria just for the pizza is shortchanging themselves. The restaurant's repertoire includes a full range of Italian specialties including fried calamari, pasta with vodka sauce and many others. Their sauces are all made on-site from fiercely guarded recipes, although inside sources tell me that the red sauce includes a variety of hand ground vegetables and takes over a day to make. Tony is a bit more forthcoming on other matters: he'll happily let you know that he takes a loss on his chicken wings, for instance, because he buys the highest quality.

If you stop in on a weekend, be prepared for a crowd, as the place has a dedicated following who turn out each week for a meal.

Continuing construction in downtown has made finding and getting into the restaurant a bit more of a challenge. Tony's is just west of the corner of Garden and Cleveland. Parking in the garage on Garden is free for the first three hours. Until the sidewalk is unblocked, the only way in is through an alley in back. If you enter the alley through the east end, Tony's is the first door.
